People with diabetes often want to know whether dates are off the menu. Dates are very sweet, and they also carry fibre and minerals, so the honest answer needs numbers. As suppliers, we at Pemborong kurma Malaysia would rather point you to what the studies measured than guess.
Diabetes and blood sugar
Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the pancreas does not make enough insulin or the body cannot use the insulin it makes, so blood sugar runs high. According to the WHO, over time it can damage blood vessels in the heart, eyes, kidneys and nerves, and it raises the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.
Diet in diabetes management
Diet is one of the main things a person with type 2 diabetes can change. The NHS advice is to eat a healthy diet that includes fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and pulses, and to cut down on processed foods high in salt and sugar. Dates are fruit, but a very sweet one, which is why people ask about them.
Why dates raise questions
Dates contain natural sugars like glucose and fructose, which can raise blood sugar. Medjool dates carry about 66 g of sugar per 100 g (USDA FoodData Central). What matters is how fast that sugar reaches the blood, and that has been measured in people (see the glycemic index section below).
What is in dates
Here is what 100 g of dates carries besides sugar.
Fibre
Medjool dates have 6.7 g of fibre per 100 g (USDA). The NHS says a diet high in fibre is associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and recommends 30 g a day. That is about the whole diet, not dates on their own.
Minerals and polyphenols
Per 100 g, Medjool dates have 696 mg potassium and 54 mg magnesium (USDA), and they contain polyphenols. No study we could find shows that these reduce inflammation in people with diabetes, so we do not claim it.
Glycemic index of dates
The glycemic index (GI) measures how quickly a food raises blood sugar.
Measured GI values
A 2011 study in the UAE tested five varieties (Fara'd, Lulu, Bo ma'an, Dabbas, Khalas) and found low GI values of about 46 to 55, with no significant blood sugar spikes in ten people with well-controlled type 2 diabetes. A 2023 review puts the range across varieties at 42.8 to 74.6, so some dates are not low GI. The review also points out that the studies behind these numbers are small and short.
Portion size still matters
The UAE study gave each person enough date flesh to supply 50 g of carbohydrate. The GI tells you how fast the sugar arrives. How much arrives depends on how many dates you eat, so a low GI does not make a bowlful safe.

Buying from Pemborong kurma Malaysia
What a supplier controls is the product itself: how fresh it is, how it is stored, and whether anything was added.
Freshness
By focusing on freshness, Pemborong kurma Malaysia ensures that dates keep their texture and flavour for longer on the shelf.
Kurma harga
The cost of dates, or kurma harga, influences consumer choices.
Buying kurma online
The rise of kurma online platforms has transformed how people access dates.
Buying direct
Kurma online platforms allow consumers to purchase dates directly from trusted suppliers, ensuring authenticity and freshness.
What the studies on dates and diabetes found
Two trials and one review carry most of the weight here.
Controlled studies
The GI study found no significant post-meal spikes in people with type 2 diabetes, and the 16-week trial found HbA1c unchanged. Neither showed that dates improve blood sugar control. The 2023 review concludes that dates may not worsen glycaemia but that the studies are small and short, and more trials are needed.
Cholesterol
The same Bahrain trial reported a small drop in total cholesterol (0.21 mmol/L) in the date group. It is one trial, and the authors say the effect of dose still has to be established.
Practical tips for eating dates with diabetes
These are practical points, not a treatment plan.
Pairing with nuts or yogurt
Many people eat dates with nuts or yogurt. We found no study testing whether this pairing changes the blood sugar response to dates, so treat it as a way to make a snack more filling, not as a treatment.
Limiting portions

In a Bahrain trial, 100 adults with type 2 diabetes who ate three dates a day for 16 weeks saw no change in HbA1c compared with people who avoided dates. That suggests a small daily portion did not worsen blood sugar in that group. Portions vary a lot by size, so it helps to weigh a few dates and count them in your carbohydrate for the day.
Choosing plain dates
Plain dates from suppliers like Pemborong kurma Malaysia, such as Medjool, carry no added sugar, unlike sugar-coated or syrup-filled date products.
Dates in culture and tradition
Dates hold deep cultural significance, especially in religious practices.
Ramadan and fasting
Dates are traditionally used to break fasts during Ramadan. For people with diabetes, mindful consumption during this period is essential.
Hospitality
Dates are often gifted during celebrations, reflecting their cultural importance. Suppliers ensure that these traditions continue with high-quality products.
Common mistakes
Two opposite mistakes come up a lot.
Cutting dates out completely
Some people with diabetes cut dates out completely. In the Bahrain trial, three dates a day did not change HbA1c over 16 weeks, so a counted portion may not need to go. That is one trial, and your own readings are the better guide.
Eating too many
Eating too many dates can raise blood sugar, highlighting the importance of moderation.
Dates in other countries
Dates are eaten worldwide, but how they are eaten differs.
Middle East
In the Middle East, dates are a staple food. Much of the research on dates and diabetes comes from the Gulf, including the UAE and Bahrain studies cited here.

Western countries
In Western countries, dates are often sold as a superfood. That is a marketing label, not a medical one.
Conclusion
For people with type 2 diabetes, the studies so far suggest a few dates a day, counted as carbohydrate, did not worsen blood sugar. They do not show that dates regulate it. Most varieties tested have a low to moderate GI, and they bring fibre that refined sugar does not. When you buy, from Pemborong kurma Malaysia or anywhere else, check the kurma harga per kilo and the label for added sugar, whether you buy in a shop or through kurma online. Dates can stay part of the table for people with diabetes, in portions agreed with their doctor or dietitian.
This article is general information, not medical advice. If you have diabetes or take medicine for blood sugar, talk to your doctor or dietitian before changing how many dates you eat.
